Why I stopped making jokes

Long time ago, up until college, I had this habit of saying jokes. Mostly I laughed; I found them quite amusing. It made me feel smart. Sometimes others laughed.

Then one day, one man made a remark that I still remember today: “This boy is so deep (in a negative way) with his jokes”. The truth was that I liked non-obvious jokes that require some thinking — some may call them dark humour. Maybe I still do today. But, I didn’t want that reputation. So I stopped.

I think it was a good decision as the net outcome of unintended jokes are most likely negative, especially if directed at others. The joke maker and bystanders laugh in the moment and then quickly forget. But, if people are provoked or embarrassed, their hurtful feelings may last forever with them.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
